Timeline

From pilot to production.

Every step is tested on the group’s own fish before it scales.

The pilot tank hall at Ontec Academy
  1. 2001–2016
Three generations of the Ontec tank tested
Pilot sites in Norway, Ireland and Scotland, each generation refined from the last.
  2. 2018
    Land-based licence awarded
15,000 tonnes a year for OFS Måløy.
  3. December 2022
Ontec Academy opens with the fourth-generation pilot plant
Fish in the pilot facility from January 2023.
  4. July 2023
Pilot 1 delivered at 2 kg
The first batch on the new parametric hybrid operating principle. Growth factor 4.32, and the site’s licence is made permanent.
  5. November 2024
Pilot 2 delivered: 99% superior grade
A full stress test: 135 days at 80–126 kg/m³, with outstanding water quality and fish welfare results.
  6. 2024
Trial approved by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority
Fish health was documented throughout by STIM. The approval cleared OFS Måløy to build out at full scale on Ontec technology.
  7. Next
A Ø10 m parametric hybrid IPU, then the first commercial stage
The hybrid IPU built as a finished product for the first time. Then two Ø22 m tanks with Ontec’s process plant, 1,100–1,400 tonnes per year.
Results

Dated, and on our own fish.

Pilot 1 · July 2023
2 kg

Delivered at 2 kg with excellent growth (growth factor 4.32), securing the site’s permanent licence. The first batch on parametric hybrid.

Pilot 2 · November 2024
99 %

Delivered at 99% superior grade after 135 days at 80–126 kg/m³: a deliberate stress test, with outstanding water quality and fish welfare.

What comes next

From a finished product to the first commercial stage.

Next is a Ø10 m parametric hybrid IPU, built as a finished product rather than a pilot, alongside the Ø10 m RAS IPU already at Ontec Academy. Stage one of the commercial build-out is two Ø22 m tanks of 2,800 m³ each, with a combined capacity of 1,100–1,400 tonnes of post-smolt a year. Ontec delivers the process plant.

Projects

Planning and upgrades.

Projects where Ontec plans new capacity or upgrades an existing site.

Process design

Vestland County’s new aquaculture centre, Måløy

Ontec designed and specified the process facility for the project’s planning. Construction is pending.

Upgrade · ongoing

Smolt facility, Western Norway

Upgrade of the on-growing division at an established smolt producer, in ongoing consultation.

Where it started

Four generations, four pilot sites.

Each generation of the Ontec tank was tested at a pilot site before the next was designed.

1st generation · 2001–03

Rognaldsvåg, Norway

First-generation design, successfully piloted.

2nd generation · 2010

Cork, Ireland

Second-generation design, successfully tested.

3rd generation · 2016

Machrihanish, Scotland

Third-generation design, successfully tested, followed by a full engineering review of every sub-system with industry partners.

4th generation · 2022–

Måløy, Norway

Ontec Academy pilot plant. Pilots in 2023 and 2024. Home of the Ø10 m RAS IPU and the base for what comes next.
